I What is it?
In pursuit is a history expression contest to recognize the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence in 2026 as part of a broader initiative comprising the National “More Perfect” alliance, Illinois Humanities, Lake County History Alliance. The Highland Park Historical Society received funding from the Community Foundation of Highland Park.
II Who can participate
Anyone who lives or works in Highland Park or Moraine Township can participate. Students in school districts whose boundaries include the City or Township may participate. There is a limit of one submission per person. There will be three prizes in three categories: Youth K-8, High school and Adult. Judging will be blind.
III What should I create
An expression in any visual or written medium. July 4, 2026 will witness the 250th anniversary of the American Declaration of Independence; plausibly the most important social contract ever enacted.
What does this anniversary and celebration mean to you?
This is meant to be an engaging and thought-provoking opportunity. With words (max 500), music, a video (max 10 minutes), or a recipe contestants should express insight and reflection on the meaning of the Declaration originally; now and in the future, personally or in a broader context. Examples might explore what the Declaration means to the character of America, reflection of Highland Park, Illinois’ role; or, a more philosophical reflection. For example, a recipe reflecting family heritage, an original recitation or composition; or, how does the Declaration differentiate between suppression (of the multitudes) and governance?
(see Jean-Jaques Rousseau. Du Contrat…, book 1, chapter 5.)
